Gastronomic room: The restaurant inside the National Museum of Anthropology

He National Museum of Anthropology (MNA)architectural and cultural pride of Mexico, was recognized this year with the Princess of Asturias Award for Concord 2025 for its commitment to the preservation of heritage and the promotion of intercultural dialogue. But beyond its majestic rooms, this museum also houses a lesser-known treasure: a gastronomic space that brings history to life through flavors.

In the heart of the enclosure, Gastronomic Room invites visitors on a sensory tour through six emblematic regions of the country. There, anthropology becomes a living experience: each dish is a narrative about corn, cocoa, chiles, quelites and the culinary traditions that have nourished the Mexican people for centuries.

A museum to savor

The Gastronomic Room was conceived as a tribute to the cultural and food diversity of Mexico. From a Oaxacan mole with native ingredients to a coastal ceviche reinterpreted with traditional techniques, its menu celebrates the fusion between history, territory and flavor.

The restaurant, open Tuesday to Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.combines hospitality with museography: soft lights, natural materials and a menu that changes according to the seasons, seeking to reflect the agricultural wealth of each region.

In addition, it has a full bar and table service, which allows you to enjoy everything from an artisanal mezcal to an infusion with traditional herbs. The goal, according to his team, is for each dish to be a masterpiece that preserves the distinctive flavors of Mexican cuisine, integrating native ingredients and traditional techniques.

The taste of recognition

In October 2025, Sala Gastronómica obtained the H badgeawarded by the Ministry of Tourism, for meeting the highest standards of hygiene and food quality. The recognition, based on the Mexican Standard NMX-F-605-NORMEX-2018, reinforces the idea that Mexican gastronomy not only excites the palate, but is also built with responsibility and technical rigor.

This award coincides with the international museum award, a symbol of how Mexico has known how to preserve its heritage and project it to the world. While the Princess of Asturias Award jury highlighted the museum as “a space for reflection on indigenous heritage and shared humanity”, the Gastronomic Room translates that harmony to the universal language of food.

Anthropology of taste

Mexican cuisine, declared Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO, is found in this space a tangible representation: a place where cornfields and codices, corn gods and modern cooking techniques intersect.

In times when heritage is usually measured in numbers or visitors, this place reached more than 3 million in 2024, according to the INAH. The MNA shows that it can also measure yourself in aromas, textures and emotions. Because if history is told with objects, gastronomy revives it with every bite.

Today, the international recognition of the National Museum of Anthropology not only celebrates its archaeological heritage, but also its capacity for cultural dialogue. In the Gastronomic Room, this dialogue becomes a daily act: that of sitting at the table and understanding, through flavor, who we are.
