Goal of doubling GDP requires sufficient electricity

The current Government’s goal of doubling the gross domestic product (GDP) of the Dominican Republic By 2036 you have the challenge of guarantee electricity sufficient and to provide the system with greater energy security.

This is how he considered it Luciano Castilloholder of Renewable Energy and Energy Systems in the Purdue UniversityUnited States, during a conversation with Diario Libre, in which he suggested that the authorities focus on continuing to diversify sources of electricity generation.

Castillo described it as a very important challenge double GDP of the country by 2036, indicating that it is linked to energy.

  • “To get there (meet Goal 2036), if you don’t have the energy required, you won’t get there. To double the GDP we cannot do it based on water (hydroelectric generation) because it will not be sustainable. The second thing, apart from doubling the GDP, is to anticipate how to integrate artificial intelligence into that goal,” he explained.

The professor suggested that making the transition to renewable energy “is very important” and that it should be combined with other sources, such as modular nuclear powerhydrogen and geothermal.

However, he stated that, although it is important energy transitionthe conversation in the country should revolve around energy security.

Between August and September This year, the electrical service in the country was affected by multiple outages, as a result of an increase in demand at night due to the heat wave that affected the population.

“What happened in the summer (electrical outages due to high demand) should not occur. Carry energy securitythat is the most important thing, but not based on fossil fuels or using water, because that is short term,” he said.

The professor, who was invited to the country to participate as a speaker at the Forum 2025 of the Dominican Association of the Electrical Industry (ADIE), maintained that having sufficient energy and from diverse sources will allow the country attract companies.

Energy interconnection

The owner of Renewable Energy and Energy Systems in the Purdue University did not hesitate to affirm that the Dominican Republic must be the energy hub for the region of Caribbean and Central America.

“None of the islands are in a position to do it, only Santo Domingo. The interconnection will lower prices (of the electricity), you don’t have to store (energy) and it helps you sell,” he explained. Luciano Castillo about the benefits that such an initiative would bring to the country.
