The president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, offered this Sunday, October 26, to act as an interlocutor in the crisis between the United States and Venezuela, amid the escalation of tensions in the region.
Lula’s proposal was informed to the press by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Brazil, Mauro Vieira, after the meeting held by the Brazilian president with US President Donald Trumpin Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, within the framework of the ASEAN Summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.
«President Lula raised the issue and stated that Latin America and South America, where we are, is a region of peace. And he offered to be a contact, an interlocutor, as he has been in the past with Venezuela, to seek mutually acceptable and correct solutions between both countries,” said the chancellor.
Lula’s initiative comes at a time of growing geopolitical tension in the region.

In recent weeks, the Trump Administration has deployed naval, air and land forces to the Caribbean, and on Friday announced the dispatch of the largest aircraft carrier in its fleet, as part of a new phase of its anti-drug campaign.
Washington has justified the bombings of a dozen vessels in the area as actions against drug trafficking routes that supply the United States.
Nicolás Maduro has denounced that the US military reinforcement is aimed at destabilizing his government.
In addition to addressing the Venezuelan situation, Lula and Trump discussed the bilateral trade agenda during the meeting, which lasted about 45 minutes and which the Brazilian president described as “excellent.”
