Danger on the roads: 236 deaths in 1,275 accidents in La Libertad

On Saturday, October 4, the peaceful city of Otuzco was the scene of a spectacular traffic accident that killed four people, including a teacher, her 16-year-old daughter and a nurse.

The magnitude of the accident, which occurred in the area known as Sol Radiante, not only caused shock among the Liberteño population, but once again brought into question the state of the roads and the surveillance of the competent authorities so that traffic rules are respected and accidents with fatal consequences are prevented.

TERROR FIGURES

According to the statistics offered by the Regional Observatory of the Transportation and Communications Management of La Libertad, so far this year, 1,275 traffic accidents have been reported in the 12 provinces of the region, which have left 1,882 people injured and 236 dead.

This is extremely worrying, since the report as of December of last year stated that 216 people lost their lives in traffic accidents. That is to say, the number of deaths in accidents on the roads was already surpassed only in October of this year.

According to the analysis of the data carried out by the aforementioned regional entity, the provinces in which the most road accidents have been reported are located on the coast of La Libertad. This is Chepén, with 377 accidents that left 505 injured and 20 dead. The province of Pacasmayo follows, with 272 accidents, 368 injuries and 22 deaths.

Very close by is the province of Virú with 258 accidents, 378 injured and 28 dead.

In statements to the press, the head of the Regional Transportation and Communications Management of La Libertad, Mirella Urrelo Seijas, indicated that the data of the accidents and their consequences have been reported by the Regional Health Management (Geresa) and the National Police of Peru (PNP).

He pointed out as some of the reasons why more vehicular accidents are recorded in these three provinces: the circulation of a large number of motorcycles, national roads and the permanent and constant traffic of heavy-duty vehicles.

SEPARATE CASE

The province of Trujillo reports a lower number of accidents, but their consequences were more serious and left more families in mourning. According to statistics, 93 accidents were recorded that left 84 injured and 66 dead, a figure that far exceeds other provinces.

For example, in Sánchez Carrión, 111 accidents have been reported, 180 injured and 21 dead. In Gran Chimú, 38 accidents were recorded, 56 injured and two dead.

In Otuzco, 35 accidents, 113 injuries and 32 deaths were reported, while in Ascope 34 accidents occurred that left 48 injured and 32 dead.

Pataz, a province whose roads urgently need to be improved, reported 17 vehicle accidents, 38 injuries and 11 deaths.

Bolívar and Julcán are two of the provinces with the fewest accidents on their roads. In both, two accidents have been reported, respectively, which left three dead.
