The former President of the Republic Jose Mujica He affirmed this Saturday before the press that he will be there to help “in whatever way he can”, in the face of the referendum on March 27. “I don’t want to occupy the place that others have to occupy, but if I have to lend a hand I will give it”said.

He explained that until now he has kept his distance from public discussions about the referendum so as not to “radicalize”. “I know that I am an old man who radicalizes. And I don’t want my people to fight”told reporters from his home in rural Montevideo.

“Obviously my vote is pink and that I am going to accompany. But the old trees provide a lot of shade, and they will soon die. You have to make way for the new trees. And I do it consciously,” she added.

Mujica affirmed that, if necessary, he will have a more active participation, “above all to thank the militants who broke their soul collecting signatures,” he said. “I feel like I have a debt. I was already old, taking care of myself for fear of peeling myself because of the pandemic issue; it’s simple. Because I love politics but I love seeing the sun even more,” he said.

The Observer He reported this Saturday that the Broad Front planned to ask Mujica for a hand in the final stretch of the campaign, in particular to attract voters in the periphery and the interior of the country, which explains a large part of the undecided.

The political force turned to the former president, who plans to participate in events in the capital and the interior in the final stretch, as well as record videos for broadcast.

The Yes campaign also concentrates the dispute over the undecided on the outskirts of Montevideo, where they target a young audience from the middle and lower sectors. As they understand in the opposition command, Mujica is still strong in both towns and that is why he is a figure that they do not want to do without in the final stretch.

Mujica received in his farm this Saturday the president of the Broad Front, Fernando Pereira, who added: “All teammates are important. Everyone is important for this stage of the campaign”. In that sense, he reported that the former vice president was also asked Daniel Astori and the former senator Lucia Topolansky that they “contribute” to the “campaign, to the best of their ability.”

The link with Lacalle

“With Lacalle I am known,” said José Mujica regarding his relationship with the current president. And he added: “We are not friends but I respect him because he is my president. AND if one day you need me and it’s worth it, I’m not going to give you a discount. Because I don’t hold grudges. I’m old”.

This is how the former president responded to a journalist’s query. As to whether Lacalle Pou is invited to the farm for a possible conversation, he replied: “The gate is open.”

In addition, he added: “I am already amortized. I belong to the memories. And I’m like every old man: giving some advice, they don’t give him a ball”.

Regarding the coalition government, the leader of the MPP maintained that “you can disagree and have differences” but “there is an ‘us’ that should return us all”. In that sense, asked the government to “reason” about “the general tone.”

Mujica considered that there is a “ditch” in Uruguay that can be enlarged, for which he asked for more tolerance. “There is a tone that I don’t like to see prosper,” he warned.
