Port-au-Prince.– At least three people lost their lives and ten others were injured in Haiti as a result of the effects of the Tropical Storm Melissawhich this Friday was located about 450 kilometers southwest of the capital, according to local authorities.
The Civil Protection Directorate also warned of abundant rains and risk of flooding during the next few hours in several departments of the island nation, which recorded flooding, landslides and falling trees in several areas.
Two people died on Thursday in a landslide that occurred in Fontamara, located at the southern entrance to Port-au-Prince, in the department of the West, while the day before a man died after a tree fell in the commune of Marigot, in the department of the Southeast.

«These events occur in a context of prolonged rains and meteorological instability, which increase the risk of landslides and falling trees, especially in the departments of Great South and West,” said Civil Protection in a report on the situation related to Melissa.
In Praville, Artibonite department, about one hundred kilometers north of the capital, a wall collapsed causing five injuries, including a 14-year-old girl who is in serious condition.
These five injuries are added to a similar number reported on Thursdaytwo of them seriously, due to flooding in several departments of the country, extremely vulnerable to natural disasters.
The southeastern, southern, Nippes, Grand’Anse and western departments are on orange alert for a cyclone.
«Tropical Storm Melissa has caused abundant rains in some regions of Haiti. Under these circumstances, meteorological authorities warn of a significant risk of flooding during the week,” reads a DPC report.
