President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said that Brazil will use resources obtained from oil to invest in the energy transition. According to him, the large amount of money obtained from fossil fuels is what will help Petrobras stop being an oil company and become an energy company.
The president’s statement was made in the early hours of this Friday (24), shortly before boarding from Indonesia to Malaysia.
When asked what message he would send to the world, amid advances in studies for oil exploration in the Equatorial Margin and COP30, in Belém, Lula stated that, first of all, people need to know that Brazil is one of the countries that has the most renewable energy.
“Brazilian gasoline uses 30% ethanol. Therefore, our gasoline is purer than others. Our diesel oil contains 20% biodiesel. Therefore, it is purer than others”, said the president.

Equatorial Margin
Furthermore, in relation to the Equatorial Margin, what happened was just authorization to carry out research in the region. “And between doing the research and having oil, it takes a long time, because you need new licenses to do things. This in a company that has expertise”, added the president.
Lula recalled that Petrobras’ competence is recognized even by the fact that the company has not had, in its history, “an oil leak anywhere”.
“It is possibly the company with the most expertise to prospect for oil in deep waters, without any damage. Now, if we are demanding that we protect the forests and that we want to work so that we can reduce the use of fossil fuels, one of the ways is for us to use oil money to consolidate the so-called energy transition of planet Earth”, argued the president.
“Petrobras is a company that will, little by little, stop being an oil company and become an energy company,” he added.
Investment
Lula then recalled that the state-owned company already invests in other types of energy, and that the money needed for this comes exactly from oil, a fuel that, according to him, will still be needed for many decades.
“It’s very easy to talk about fossil fuel like that, but it’s difficult for us to say who today has the means to free themselves from fossil fuel. Nobody does”, he emphasized.
By reiterating that Brazil will continue to use this money for this purpose, Lula concluded: “as long as the world needs it, Brazil will not throw away wealth that can improve the lives of the Brazilian people”.
