Colombian defeat: WTO once again favored the EU in dispute over potato tariffs

A committee of the World Trade Organization determined that Colombia did not fully comply with an earlier ruling that tariffs imposed as antidumping measure (trade defense actions) by the South American country to frozen potatoes from the EU were not in accordance with WTO rules.

The opinion concludes that the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism (MinCIT)has acted in a manner inconsistent with the Anti-Dumping Agreement“, undermining or nullifying the benefits for the European Union.

(Further: Inflationary pressures threaten Colombian household spending).

We recommend that Colombia arrange its measures in accordance with its obligations under the Antidumping Agreement.“concludes the decision of the WTO committee.

In November 2018, Colombia imposed antidumping duties on frozen French fries from the EUwhich affected almost 85% of these community exports, valued at 19.3 million euros and coming mainly from Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands.

After an expiration review, Colombia extended its antidumping duties until September 30, 2027.

(Besides: Controversy in the United States over the announcement of the import of Argentine meat).

Brussels defends that the Colombian authorities have calculated the tariffs with “flawed methodologies“that caused oversized rates.
