President Gustavo Petro indicated that he has “managed to free Colombians from Venezuelan prisons,” but did not specify the number of Colombians released.

The president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, confirmed, in a press conference, the release of some Colombians detained in Venezuela, although he did not specify the number of people released.

«Now perhaps Venezuela will give us one, captured from the other side, a Colombian-Albanian, because I have managed to free Colombians from Venezuelan prisons. That is news that I don’t know if it had been made public. Among those, not all of them are innocent citizens, but apparently a boss is coming,” Petro commented in a news conference in the face of tensions with the United States.

On October 13, after a protest at the binational Simón Bolívar bridge, it was agreed to create a humanitarian commission to visit Colombians detained in the country and verify their state of confinement.

Colombia’s vice minister of multilateral relations, Mauricio Jaramillo Jassir, said then that President Petro’s desire was “the urgent need to meet with the relatives of Colombians detained in Venezuela.”

Human rights defenders and family members have denounced the detention of foreigners in Venezuelan territory, under accusations of terrorism. In its latest report, the Penal Forum stated that there are 97 citizens of other countries or with dual nationality behind bars in Venezuela.

According to the Colombian Foreign Ministry, at least 35 are Colombian citizens or dual nationals who have not had access to private defense, consular assistance or contact with their families. Among them is the humanitarian worker Manuel Tique, the young Kevin Saavedra and Danner Barajas.
