An “oscillation” partially disconnects the National Electrical System

This afternoon there was a “partial” disconnection of the National Electrical System, according to what was reported by the Electrical Union (UNE), although it has not yet specified the territorial scope of this new “outage”.

In a brief message on Facebook, the Electrical Union indicated that the departure occurred due to an “oscillation.”

Likewise, he adds that specialists are already working on his full recovery, which should occur “in a short time.”

In particular, the Havana electricity company notified that a load drop from Felton caused a DAF trip, which affects the Plaza, Tropical, Príncipe and Naranjito substations, leaving a number of circuits without electricity.

The previous drop in the SEN, which was total, occurred on September 10, after the “unforeseen departure” of the Antonio Guiteras thermoelectric plant in Matanzas. This was the second overall drop in the SEN in 2025, and the fifth since October last year.

In previous total disconnections, recovery efforts have extended for several days.

On October 18, 2024, a failure at the Guiteras thermoelectric plant caused a massive blackout, with a recovery of almost five days, while on November 6, Hurricane Rafael caused another disconnection, complicated by the damage left by the meteorological event.

Meanwhile, on December 4, a new failure in Guiteras generated a blackout at 2:08 in the morning, although the reconnection was quick. Three months later, on March 14, 2025, a breakdown at the Diezmero substation in Havana triggered another fall, resolved in two days.

Finally, on September 10, 2025, a third failure in Guiteras left much of the country without power, with a partial reconnection after 12 hours.

This new fall in the SEN occurs in the midst of a worsening of the prolonged energy crisis that Cuba has been suffering for several years, mainly due to the age and poor condition of its thermoelectric plants and the chronic fuel shortage.

For this Thursday, the UNE had estimated an impact that, at the time of maximum demand, the maximum electricity generation capacity would be around 1,595 MW, for a demand of 3,320 MW, although the entry of unit 3 of the CTE Santa Cruz, with 45 MW, is planned.

Currently, seven of the 16 available thermoelectric production units are out of service due to breakdowns or maintenance.

In addition, 72 distributed generation plants are out of service due to lack of fuel (diesel and fuel oil) and nearly twenty are not operational due to a lack of lubricant.

Meanwhile, the solar program undertaken by the Government, which has launched 32 photovoltaic parks throughout the country this year, alleviates the electricity deficit during the day, but not during the night as it does not have batteries to accumulate energy.
