The US Treasury Department announced this Wednesday sanctions against Russia’s two main oil companies, Rosneft and Lukoil.
The measure is given in response to what described as Moscow’s “lack of serious commitment” to a peace process that ends the war in Ukrainehe said EFE.
“Given President Putin’s refusal to end this senseless war, Treasury is sanctioning Russia’s two largest oil companies that fund the Kremlin’s war machine,” Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said in a statement.
The sanctions include the blocking of assets in US territory, the prohibition of transactions with US citizens or companies and the exclusion from the US financial system.
Now they are extended to subsidiaries and companies linked to oil companies in which they have more than 50% participation.

For his part, the president donald trump He described the measures as “massive sanctions” and assured that their objective is to exert pressure on both Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelensky to reach a negotiated resolution to the conflict.
Rosneft, a state company that produces about 6% of the world’s crude oil and almost half of Russia’s, and Lukoil, its main private competitor, together export about 3.1 million barrels per day.
The Treasury reiterated its willingness to adopt “new measures” if necessaryand urged Washington’s allies to join the sanctions.
Since the start of the Russian invasion in February 2022, the US has sanctioned more than 6,000 people and entities related to the Russian war machine, in coordination with the European Union, the United Kingdom and other international partners.
