Juana de Melo on carnival debt does not rule out the legal route
One of the References of one of the most important Samba Schools in the department, does not rule out initiating legal action in case of not receiving the balance owed to him for his participation in the latest edition of the momo party.
He said that it is not to harm the current Departmental Government Administration, but that the idea is to get that money – about 250 thousand pesos – to compensate for the investment made.
“We had already had a meeting with the Mayor. What was agreed upon is really what was done here” manifested Rodrigo Rodriguez in relation to the first advance payment for participation in the 2026 carnival.
“While we know that it was not this Administration, we know that it was in the past, the debt really exists. In our case it amounts to $250,000. We put that money among the members of the Board, we have no where to get that money from, we have to recover it.” said the Director of Juana de Melo. “Beyond the fact that it was not in this Administration, it was the Municipality. Here we are told that there is nothing that appears. We have all the documents signed by the Accountant who was dedicated to working with the previous Commission where she says how many deliveries we had, how much the budget we presented was and what they owe us to this day” he added.
“We know that this Administration has nothing to do with the previous debt, but the Municipality as an institution is one. We are going to advise ourselves, we were waiting to see how we were going to solve it” he stated.
YURRAMENDI PAID PREVIOUS DEBT
Rodrigo Rodríguez recalled that when José Yurramendi assumed the Mayorship, he took charge of a debt that came from the Administrations of Botana, Pablo Duarte and Carmen Tort. “We see that this is not going to be the case now, they are not going to take care of that debt, but we are going to complain. This now becomes part of seeing with those who know, for example, a Lawyer” said.
One of the members of the Board of Directors of the Juana de Melo Samba School did not rule out resorting to Justice to get that money. “We need that money, we provided it and we need it” he insisted.
Although he preferred not to speak for other groups, he estimated that at least 3 others are in the same situation with debts of different amounts. “I can’t talk about the others because I know what they owe me, I know what they signed for me. I can’t speak for the others, but I know there is more” he stated.
“Here it is not that we are demanding something to do harm, we are demanding what is ours, what was signed, what we promised to the people who worked for us, what we asked for on loan in Salto, Artigas and other places. The day came, we had to pay with the savings of each family, of each person, even of us the directors, which has nothing to do with the carnival money” held.
ACCORDING TO THE NEW PAYMENT SYSTEM
Rodríguez said he was satisfied with the way resources will be distributed in the current Administration headed by Mayor Morel. “We are super satisfied” he synthesized. “What we were told in the previous meeting, what we were talking about with the Coordinator – Fabián Martínez – was fulfilled” projection.
“Everything that was said was fulfilled. The first delivery has already been made. They had told us that the second was going to take a little longer and now they tell us that it will take less. We are happy about that. Yes, one week after the carnival we will have 100% payment, in the history of Juana’s 10 years that we celebrate this year, it will be the first time” he assured. “If it happens, it will be the first time” he insisted.
“Having this money now makes our work a lot easier because it costs a lot, the price of a pen, the price of an allegory goes up more and more. Everything costs more and the closer it gets to carnival, the price increases by 100%.” Rodrigo Rodríguez closed.
