Guido Bellido proposes eliminating all zoos nationwide

The Podemos Peru congressman, Guido Bellidopresented the bill that seeks to progressively eliminate all public zoos in the country.

The proposal aims to “guarantee the protection and well-being of animals in captivity, promote respect for wildlife and encourage sustainable conservation alternatives without resorting to confinement of animals.” According to the text of the project, the creation and development of new zoos, both public and private, will be prohibited.

In addition, the animals currently found in these spaces must be transferred to wildlife rescue centers, where they will receive medical care and can be reinserted into their natural habitat, whenever biologically possible. Otherwise, they will be delivered to duly regulated conservation centers.

Likewise, Congressman Bellido proposed that the total elimination of public zoos be carried out within a maximum period of ten years, counted from the entry into force of the law.

The financing of this process will fall to the Ministry of the Environment (MINAM), as well as to the regional and local governments, “without demanding additional resources from the Public Treasury.”

Additionally, the norm would allow receiving support from international cooperation and civil society to make the transition viable.

Finally, the proposal also contemplates that the Ministry of Education, in coordination with MINAM, incorporates awareness programs on respect for wildlife and the protection of ecosystems into the school curriculum.
