The department of La Guajira remains in a state of readiness due to the effects of tropical storm Melissa, which has begun to cause emergencies in several sectors, especially in the municipality of Maicao, as a result of heavy rains accompanied by strong winds and electric shocks.
For more than an hour there was a downpour in Maicao, which leftfloods in more than ten neighborhoods and commercial establishments, leaving dozens of victims. People who were in their homes were trapped by the water, leaving some sectors without electricity.

Among the affected neighborhoods are: Villa Amelia 1 and 2, Concepción, Montes de Oca Urbanization, Santa Isabel, La Pista, La Bendiciones de Dios settlement, Belén de Budea, and other vulnerable areas of that border town.
In the face of this emergency, Mayor Miguel Felipe Aragón indicated that he accompanied those affected and rescued a person who was injured. and had to be immediately transferred to a medical center.
“We are making a general diagnosis that allows us to have a clear vision of this problem and guarantee the transfer and temporary relocation of affected families, especially women who are pregnant or have just given birth,” said Mayor Miguel Aragón.
“We seek to prevent the rains that could continue in the coming days from aggravating the situation. of those who live in vulnerable conditions,” said the local leader.
The municipal authorities, in coordination with the Departmental Risk Management Council, maintain constant monitoring of meteorological conditions and warn of the possibility of new rainfall during the week.
It is worth mentioning that the general forecast indicates that The municipalities of Maicao, Uribia, Manaure and Riohacha could be the most affected due to the presence of intense cloudiness and rain associated with Tropical Storm Melissa.
