Urgent meeting of taximeters due to accidents and service situation in Melo
The Cerro Largo Driver Center called all affiliated taximeters to a serious and urgent meeting yesterday at its headquarters located on Route 26. The event was attended by the Municipality’s Traffic Director and part of its technical team, who participated in a direct exchange with the drivers behind the wheel.
The call arose at a time of growing concern within the sector, due to the repetition of traffic accidents involving taxi units, events that – according to several drivers – have been recorded with an alarming frequency and have generated negative public repercussions. “We are being in the news for reasons that concern us and we want to find solutions together,” members of the union said.
Among the topics addressed at the meeting were the current status of the units, the mechanical and safety conditions of the vehicles, compliance with current regulations—including the corresponding professional booklet—and the need to strengthen control over stopping points and places assigned for boarding and alighting passengers.
Another of the central issues was the presence of private cars that would be performing tasks similar to the taxi service, a situation that the sector considers unfair competition and that, according to them, directly affects the work and safety of the authorized drivers.
The directors of the Drivers Center highlighted the importance of the attendance of all members, given that it was an exchange “frank and necessary” with the municipal authorities, with the aim of undertaking concrete measures that contribute to improving the operation of the service, the safety of workers and the image of the sector in the eyes of the population.
The meeting was a turning point for the taximeter union, which seeks to unify criteria, strengthen regulation and propose urgent solutions in the face of a reality that, they claim, “can’t wait anymore.”
