
President Donald Trump’s Secretary of State and National Security Advisor, Marco Rubioheads a pressure campaign against the government of Nicolás Maduroaccording to a report by Wall Street Journal.
Rubio – who for more than a decade has promoted Maduro’s departure from the Senate – now has, according to the publication, the possibility of directly applying your policy towards Caracas. The strategy combines economic sanctions, anti-drug operations and military deployment in the Caribbeanwith the aim of weaken Maduro’s power and reduce the flow of drugs into the United States.
The plan, supported by figures close to Trump such as Stephen Miller, Susie Wiles and Pamela Bondiincludes the use of B-52 bombers, warships and special forces as part of a show of force in the region. Bondi stated: “Nicolás Maduro is a narcoterrorist and fugitive from American justice who has delegated to terrorist organizations to stay in power. His reign will not last forever”while Rubio has described the Venezuelan leader as “a cancer in the Western Hemisphere”.
The White House considers this campaign a strategic and economic opportunitywhile reinforces its internal discourse against drug trafficking and socialism. In response, Maduro accused Rubio of being the “war lord” and warned Trump that his adviser could “get blood on his hands.”
He Wall Street Journal highlights that Rubio, now with executive power, has gone from being a legislative critic to a direct executor of US foreign policy towards Venezuelaconsolidating his influence in President Trump’s inner circle.
