He Airport International Juan Gualberto Gómez, located a few kilometers from the Varadero resort, recently announced a call for entrepreneurs interested in opening a store in its facilities.
The area, which would be intended for non-gastronomic retail sales, would be located in the International Traffic Hall, with an approximate area of 24 square meters, according to the information provided on the aerodrome’s Facebook profile.
That publication indicates that interested parties will have seven calendar days – until next October 27 – to present projects to the Varadero Airport Base Business Union (UEB), belonging to the Cuban Company of Airport Services SA (Ecasa).
Once the contract that establishes the duties and rights of the parties is established, those who so agree will have to pay the tenant company a value of 1224.00 CUP per month, it is explained in the call.
The publication specifies the requirements that each proposal must meet, as well as the methodology for its presentation to the authorities in charge of selecting the lessor of the space.
This alternative is part of a strategy of the Cuban Government to promote communion between all actors in the economy, opening the doors to entrepreneurship in different sectors.
Spaces on the Havana Malecón open to private entrepreneurship
Last June, and as part of a recovery plan for the Pier of Havana, several public spaces on that important artery became available for rent for various purposes by entrepreneurs of the private sector.
Similar experiences have been experienced, with greater or lesser success, in other areas of the economy, including transportation.
This summer the emerging private sector surpassed the state sector in the value of retail sales for the first time in the last six decades.
According to data According to the National Office of Statistics and Information (Onei), the non-state sector generated 55% of retail sales of goods and services – public services are not included – during 2024, when a year earlier it had remained at 44%.
Starbucks, Burger King or KFC: How do Cubans adapt American franchises?
One of the factors that have allowed this growth lies in the expansion promoted by the Government to private management in economic relations.
Also influencing is the 11% contraction of the state economy over the last five years, which is mainly expressed in the shortage of essential products, high inflation and the energy crisis.
This supply gap in the domestic market has been gradually filled by private enterprise, in which availability and variety are notably greater compared to state stores, although with high prices.
