Dams in the country ready to receive rain from Storm Melissa, says EGEHID

Santo Domingo. – The executive president of the Dominican Hydroelectric Generation Company (EGEHID), Rafael Salazarreported that the The country’s dams are in stable condition and have sufficient storage capacity. to receive the waters generated by the ttropical mint Melissa, without the risk of overflows or uncontrolled spills.

Salazar explained that, along with National Institute of Hydraulic Resources (INDRHI) and the Dam Committee (COPRE)permanent coordination has been established to monitor reservoir levels and regulate water flow safely.

“The dams are prepared to receive these waters and take advantage of them in favor of the productivity and well-being of the country. There is no alarm for the opening of floodgates. Everything is under control and in safe conditions,” Salazar assured.

The official explained that, except for the dams Sabaneta and Lopez Angosturawhich present high levels due to their small size, all the others are capable of storing more water.
Among the dams mentioned are Tavera-Bao, Monción, Rincón, Atillo, Valdesia and Sabanayeguawhich add up to a joint capacity greater than the 300 million cubic meters available to capture water.

Salazar explained that the country will find itself in the months of January and February in a favorable moment for reservoir recovery after the effects of the drought, which will allow guarantee stability in the water supply for aqueducts, irrigation and electricity generation in the coming months.

Likewise, he highlighted the coordinated work of the Committee on Dams and Reservoirs (COPRE)which operates in permanent session during weather events and that has strengthened its monitoring, prediction and response protocols in extreme situations.

“Today we have more precise prediction services and more refined protocols than in previous years. This allows us to responsibly manage floods and reduce downstream risks,” the official stressed when interviewed on the Hoy Mismo program.

The director of EGEHID also pointed out that the Dam system is one of the country’s greatest natural assetsfor its role in regulating water and promoting energy, agricultural and human consumption production.

Finally, Salazar called on the population to follow the guidelines of emergency agencies and protect your families and propertyhighlighting that the rains, although beneficial for the reservoirs, can also cause damage if proper precautions are not taken.
