The lemon tree that raised its voice

Bernardo Bravo was murdered while leading the fight against extortion in Michoacán.

One of the lines of investigation of the Michoacán Prosecutor’s Office is that the president of the Association of Citrus Growers of the Apatzingán Valley may have been summoned by a criminal group before being murdered in the Cenobio Moreno community.

The “proudly Limonero” as he described himself on his social networks raised his voice to denounce that Michoacán was a victim of extortion.

In a publication on October 15, Bravo asked for lemon trees “security to work our land without fear.”

Their demands came from a long time ago. In an interview with Political ExpansionBravo stated that the crime charged the producers with frequent charges.

“There have been charges for a long time, because you meet these people and they ask you… That there is an impact of violence, well yes, all producers have been affected, it is not new, it has been going on for years,” said the leader of lemon trees that cover the areas of Apatzingán, Buenavista, Tepalcatepec, Aguililla and Múgica.

Bernardo Bravo had security elements, but, according to authorities, his bodyguard was not with him when his murder occurred.

“Yes, he had elements, escorts and it is being investigated. The prosecutor said it today, in that sense, because apparently he moves from Morelia to Apatzingán accompanied by an escort, but in Apatzingán, for some reason, he makes a change of vehicle and is no longer accompanied by this custody. We are investigating that, and the elements that were providing escort are already making their statements,” detailed Governor Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla.
