HOLY SUNDAY.– The General Directorate of Penitentiary and Correctional Services (DGSPC) launched his emergency plan given the possibility of flooding caused by an active tropical wave in the Caribbean, which could evolve into a tropical cyclone in the next few hours.
The operation aims protect life and integrity of people deprived of liberty, as well as the personnel who work in the country’s prisons. Also, look for preserve prison infrastructure due to possible effects of heavy rains.
The head of the institution, Roberto Santanareported that a permanent coordination with security and administration teams of penitentiary centers, to execute the established prevention protocols.

“During atmospheric phenomena of this magnitude, we reinforce attention in areas such as The Victory, Najayo 17 and Rafeywhich historically have been more vulnerable to heavy rainfall,” Santana explained.
The plan includes constant monitoring of risk areasreview of drainage, energy and drinking water systems, in addition to the enabling safe spaces for possible internal evacuations.
According to him National Institute of Meteorology (Indomet)the tropical wave associated with a low pressure center in the Caribbean Sea presents 90% probability of cyclonic development in the next seven days. The phenomenon could intensify in the next 24 to 48 hours, generating torrential rains, thunderstorms and gusts of wind in several provinces of the country.
The DGSPC reiterated its commitment to the safety and protection of the prison populationand urged its staff to remain alert and follow emergency protocols until weather conditions improve.
