Venezuela assumes vice presidency of the International Mediation Organization

Venezuela was appointed vice president of the recently inaugurated International Organization for Mediation (OImed), during the first session of the Governing Council held in Hong Kong.

The initiative, promoted by the People’s Republic of China under the leadership of President Xi Jinping, seeks to fill the institutional void in international mediation.

The South American country will share the vice presidency with Kenya, while the presidency will be held by Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Chunying Hua.

What is the OIMED?

The International Organization for Mediation (OImed) is a new multilateral organization that offers a flexible, voluntary and effective alternative for the peaceful resolution of conflicts between States and international actors.

Its creation responds to the need to strengthen global dialogue in a context marked by geopolitical tensions and disputes without reliable resolution mechanisms.

The official headquarters is located in Hong Kong and has the participation of 38 countries, mainly from Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean.

Venezuelan participation and official message

The Venezuelan delegation, headed by the vice minister for Asia, the Middle East and Oceania, Tatiana Pugh Moreno, expressed that the country will contribute its experience in processes of resistance, dialogue and defense of national sovereignty.

Foreign Minister Yván Gil shared the official statement through his Telegram channel, highlighting Venezuela’s commitment to Bolivarian Peace Diplomacy.

During the opening ceremony, Venezuela reaffirmed its confidence in the OImed as a global platform of reference for mediation, in contrast to coercive or interventionist approaches.

Composition of the Governing Council

In the first session of the Government Council, the following were elected:

  • President: Chunying Hua, Vice Foreign Minister of China
  • Vice President: Tatiana Pugh Moreno, Vice Minister of Venezuela
  • Vice President: Willy Bett, Kenyan Ambassador to China

The structure reflects a geographical and political balance that seeks to represent diverse regions and diplomatic approaches.
