The president of the Republic, Luis Lacalle Poudefended the chancellor Francisco Bustillo and his use of official car to go to Punta del Este on more than twenty occasions for personal reasons, with per diem and overnight for the driver.
“When someone from the government makes a mistake, as happened with the chancellor a few days ago, it is a matter of making amends. The issue of the car, really, I think that now the man is charging to collect. Actually I think they are hitting him for hitting. Because there is no illegality and from my point of view no immoral act,” said the president this Saturday, after returning from Chile, where he went with Bustillo himself.
In reference to the news published by The Observer this Thursday, Lacalle added that “whoever spreads the news or generated that news will have their reasons.”
“From the point of view of the government, when someone makes a mistake and you already know, the government removed several hierarchs as soon as we started, for various reasons. So our pulse is not shaking. Now, when they hit to hit, we don’t get on the car“, he added.
Lacalle said that Bustillo “didn’t have a house in Uruguay and lived part of the time in Punta del Este,” as reported in the note from The Observer. “Sometimes in the summer season he had meetings that are justified in Punta del Este with businessmen, investors, who come often,” he commented.
