On the eve of the 17th anniversary of the death of samba singer Luiz Carlos da Vila, who passed away on October 20, 2008, the program Samba na Gamboa brings back stories about the composer and successes from his career in the unprecedented edition that TV Brasil airs this Sunday (19), at 1pm.Samba na Gamboa will have classics by Luiz Carlos da Vila this Sunday

To remember the artist’s work and talk about his legacy in the popular music scene, presenter Teresa Cristina chats with singer, composer and guitarist Cláudio Jorge, friend and one of the great partners of the late honoree. The tribute brings back hits from Bamba’s repertoire.

The program recalls the trajectory of Luiz Carlos da Vila, a personality always remembered for his important passage through the composers wing of the Vila Isabel samba school. The artistic name of the late icon of the genre even comes from the Carioca festivities group.

The star’s career has another remarkable passage. Luiz Carlos da Vila frequented the well-known Cacique de Ramos pagode circle in the late 1970s. He was one of the creators of the new way of doing samba in Rio that revolutionized the popular music scene. The composer still regularly contributed lyrics to the hits of the group Fundo de Quintal.

Original production by the public broadcaster, Samba na Gamboa can be followed on Channel YouTube and in the app TV Brasil Play. With an alternative window on the small screen on Saturdays at 11pm, the program is still broadcast on National Radio. The attraction goes live on Saturdays, at noon, for the entire network.

Teresa Cristina and Cláudio Jorge talk about the importance of Luiz Carlos da Vila in the popular culture scene.

“He was a fantastic composer. Among Brazilian poets, I believe he was the only one who created an image that others couldn’t. I often say that he is the Salvador Dalí of samba”, defines the partner who produced albums by Luiz Carlos da Vila, made an album together and even competed in samba.

“Luiz Carlos da Vila was a light for those who had the opportunity to spend time with him. He was a sweet person, with a sophisticated sense of humor. He was able to be in several places at the same time in Rio de Janeiro. It was a great friendship. We had a lot of fun. Very funny stories. I suffer to this day because of his absence”, says Cláudio Jorge about the artist who passed away at the age of 59 due to complications resulting from bowel cancer.

Host and guest perform samba hits that Luiz Carlos da Vila helped immortalize as the anthem The Show must go oncreated by him with other icons of the genre: Arlindo Cruz and Sombrinha. The program of TV Brasil still brings Beyond Reason and Bonfire of a Passiontwo of Bamba’s main songs.

The special also rescues Kizomba, Race Festivalchampion samba from the Vila Isabel samba school, at the 1988 Rio carnival. The classic composed by Luiz Carlos with Rodolpho de Souza and Jonas Rodrigues lifted the Sambódromo da Marquês de Sapucaí in the voice of Gera.

The repertoire chosen for Samba na Gamboa also has other songs by the artist that fill the conversation. Claudio Jorge remembers partnerships he made with Luiz Carlos da Vila. To pay homage to his friend, the singer, composer and guitarist sings songs like Pure Beauty and Principle of Infinity.

Production history

Samba na Gamboa brings together great performers from the new generations and renowned names in the genre and icons of MPB for a lively samba circle. With Diogo Nogueira, the program had seven seasons and was recorded between 2008 and 2018. To this day, the attraction is part of the public channel’s schedule.
