Youth unemployment was once again above 20%, This was announced by the National Administrative Department of Statistics (Dane) in its report presented yesterday on the employment situation of people between 15 and 28 years of age in the country. According to the statistical entity, the unemployment rate of the young population stood at 20.6%, registering a decrease of 2.1 percentage points (pps) compared to the moving quarter November 2020 – January 2021 (22.7%).

The records of the Dane also showed how the age population de work from 15 to 28 years it amounts to 11.35 million citizens, but of those, there are 5.1 million outside the labor force. The remaining correspond to 4.89 million young people who currently work, and 1.27 million who are unemployed, that is, they intend to work.
For the reference quarter, the global participation rate (TGP) of young people in the national total was 54.3%, the same period of the previous year this rate was 57.5%, which represents a decrease of 3.2 pps . The employment rate (OT) for the total number of people between 15 and 28 years old was 43.1%, showing a decrease of 1.2 pps compared to the moving quarter November 2020 – January 2021 (44.3%).

GENDER GAP
One of the data highlighted in the Dane report has to do with young people between the ages of 15 and 28 who he does not study, but he is not working either. According to the entity, for the period between November 2021 and January 2022 there were 3.12 million young people in this situation. Of them, 1.06 million are men and 2.05 million are women.
Although the youth unemployment rate is still several points above the national unemployment rate, there is a gap between men and women that increases in the case of young people. The report showed how the youth unemployment rate reached 16.3% in the male case, and that for the quarter in question 583,000 young men were looking for work.
In their case, the youth unemployment rate was 26.7%, and there were 690,000 young women looking for work.
EMPLOYMENT BY SECTORS
In the cities there was an important advance in terms of youth employment in relation to the data of a year ago, since the unemployment rate of the young population was 21.2%, registering a decrease of 4.8 pps compared to the moving quarter November 2020 – January 2021 (26.0%).
For the quarter between November 2021 and January 2022, the sector that concentrated the highest number of employed persons within the young population was ctrade and vehicle repair, with 19.4% of total jobs. This sector saw a reduction in jobs, because while between November 2020 and January 2021 it employed 1.08 million young people, in the last measurement it reported only 950,000, which implies 134,000 fewer jobs.
In agriculture, livestock, hunting, forestry and fishing, 14.6% of jobs are concentrated, but there was also a reduction of 119,000 jobs when compared to the previous year, and went from 831,000 young workers to 712,000 people in that age range.
INFORMALITY RATE
Another report that Dane delivered yesterday was that of the informality figures at the national level. According to the entity, it stood at 44.9%. Likewise, the proportion of informal workers in the 13 cities and metropolitan areas was 43.5% for the moving quarter November 2021 – January 2022.
According to Dane, the cities that presented the highest proportion of informality were: Cúcuta and its metropolitan area with 67.0%, Sincelejo (66.3%) and Riohacha (63.0%). On the contrary, the cities with the lowest proportion of informality were: Bogotá DC (34.0%), Manizales and its metropolitan area (38.0%) and Medellín and its metropolitan area (40.3%).
