Save one of the most legendary stories in the country

News Colombia.

Less than two hours from Bogotá, between green mountains and an air that smells of tranquility, is Guatavita, a small municipality that seems straight out of northern Italy.

Its cobbled streets, white facades and red tile roofs form an urban complex so harmonious that many describe it as “Colombian Italy”.

Whoever arrives for the first time is surprised by the feeling of being in a European town, but surrounded by Andean nature. The flowers on the balconies, the clean paths and the silence of the place create an atmosphere of peace that is difficult to find near the capital.

A design designed to make you fall in love

Guatavita is one of the best preserved towns in Cundinamarca. Its modern architecture with colonial inspiration did not arise by chance: it was designed after the transfer of the old town, which was flooded in the 1960s to make way for the reservoir that today surrounds the area.

Since then, the new Guatavita has been an example of urban planning, with an aesthetic that combines the traditional with the European.

Today, walking through its streets is a stroll between craft galleries, cafes, squares and viewpoints that invite you to stay longer than planned. In addition, the calm of the environment makes it a favorite destination for those looking to disconnect without moving too far from Bogotá.

What to do in Guatavita

The municipality offers options for all types of visitors: from architectural and cultural tours through the town center, to horseback riding, ecological walks and water sports in the reservoir.

There are also areas set up for camping, which allows you to enjoy starry nights in the middle of the Cundinamarca landscape.

The proximity to the capital has boosted weekend tourism. The buses to Guatavita leave from the TransMilenio North Portal and the journey lasts around 90 minutes, an advantage for those who wish to travel without their own vehicle.

Where myth comes to life

But Guatavita not only dazzles with its European appearance. Very close to the town is the famous Guatavita Lagoon, the scene of one of the most fascinating stories of the Muisca culture: the legend of The Golden.

According to the story, the chief of the region covered himself with gold dust and, in the middle of a sacred ceremony, entered the lagoon to offer precious metals and jewels to the gods. Those rituals inspired the search for a supposed golden city that obsessed explorers for centuries.

Although this mythical treasure was never found, history turned Guatavita into a symbol of mysticism and cultural heritage. Today, visitors come to the lagoon not only for its natural beauty, but also for the legendary weight contained in its reflecting pool.

A town that preserves its magic

Guatavita has managed to maintain its essence. Its cobblestone streets, white architecture and red roofs are not only part of its visual charm, but also the reflection of a community that has learned to coexist between tourism, history and nature.

Visiting it is traveling in time without leaving Cundinamarca: an encounter between the indigenous past, European inspiration and the tranquility that is only found in mountain towns.
