Dozens of Venezuelans gathered this Saturday in Risorgimento Square, in Rome, to demand the release of political prisoners in Venezuela.
On the eve of the canonization of Dr. José Gregorio Hernández and Mother Carmen Rendiles, protesters gathered in the square and covered the ground with photographs of those deprived of liberty under the motto “a canonization without political prisoners.”
Later, they moved to Pius XII Square, in front of St. Peter’s Square, in the Vatican, where they sang songs for freedom and affirmed that without freedom there is no peace.
The non-governmental organization Penal Forum, in a balance until October 13, reported 845 people imprisoned for political reasons, of which 103 are women and 4 are adolescents.

For its part, the Committee for the Freedom of Political Prisoners of Venezuela in its IG account assured that, “each face displayed in this square represents a life, a family, a story that deserves freedom.”
“The new saints of Venezuela – symbols of faith, compassion and service – inspire this call: a canonization without political prisoners, because faith cannot be celebrated behind bars,” the Committee said.
On September 29, the opposition leader and 2025 Nobel Peace Prize winner, María Corina Machado, asked Pope Leo XIV to intercede for the release of Venezuelan political prisoners before canonization.
