He Pope Leo XIV designated as coadjutor archbishop of Santo Domingo, with right of succession, to Monsignor Carlos Tomás Morel Diplanwho to date served as bishop of La Vega, a position he assumed on December 7, 2024.
The information was released this Saturday by Conference of the Dominican Episcopate.
According to him Code of Canon Lawhe coadjutor bishop “attend to the diocesan bishop in the entire government of the diocese and takes his place when he is absent or impeded”.
In case the episcopal seat remains vacant, the coadjutor bishop passes automatically to occupy the position of bishop of the diocese for which he was appointed.
About Monsignor Morel Diplán
Carlos Tomás Morel Diplan was born on November 2, 1969 in Jagua MountainMoca, Espaillat province. He completed his basic studies at the elementary school of Canca the Queen (1978-1986) and completed secondary education at high school Mercedes Pena from Licey al Medio (1986-1990).
In 1991 he entered the Holy Curé of Ars Seminary de La Vega, and later carried out philosophical and theological studies in the Saint Thomas Aquinas Pontifical Seminary (1992-2000), where he obtained bachelor’s degrees in Philosophy and Religious Sciences.
Was ordained priest on June 24, 2000.
- On December 14, 2016, the Pope Francis named him auxiliary bishop from Santiago de los Caballeros and holder of Capo della Foresta.
- On December 3, 2023, the Pope Francis designated him apostolic administrator of the diocese of La Vegaand later, on October 18, 2024, he was named titular bishop of that diocese.
With his new designation as coadjutor archbishop of Saint DominicMonsignor Morel Diplán will accompany the current archbishop in the pastoral government of the archdiocese and will be in a position of happen in office.
The archdiocese of Santo Domingo is presided over by the archbishop Francisco Ozoria Acosta.
