The president of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), Minister Edson Fachin, scheduled the Court’s virtual session for 8 pm to resume the trial on the decriminalization of abortion. The voting session will remain open until 11:59 pm on Monday (20).
The decision was taken after Minister Luís Roberto Barroso requested the return of the trial, which had been suspended since September 2023, when he asked for the process to be highlighted by suspending the analysis of the case.
The resumption of the trial takes place on Barroso’s last day as Supreme Court minister. As of this Saturday (18), he leaves the Court after announcing early retirement.
The judgment on the decriminalization of abortion is motivated by an action filed by PSOL in 2017. The party defends that terminating a pregnancy up to the 12th week should no longer be a crime. The party claims that criminalization affects the dignity of the human person and especially poor black women.
So far, the trial only has a vote from former minister Rosa Weber. Before retiring in 2023, she voted in favor of the decriminalization of abortion up to the 12th week of pregnancy.
