According to a study by Walmart Chile, parent company of the Líder supermarkets, families increasingly allocate more of their budget to bread. According to the National Institute of Statistics (INE), the price of bread has risen 4.4% in the last twelve months, accumulating nine consecutive increases in the Consumer Price Index (CPI). Even so, daily consumption remains an essential part of the national routine.
How much does a Chilean family spend per month on bread?
In Chile, eight out of ten people say they eat bread every day, whether at breakfast or during eleven, a custom that is maintained regardless of market variations. The Walmart Chile report details that the average monthly expenditure per household is around $28,000, while annual consumption reaches 90 kilos per person.
Purchasing habits are also revealing: most households purchase bread between six and seven times a day. monthalthough some families do it up to ten times, if the combined purchases between bread in bulk and packaging. The high frequency shows the importance of fresh bread in the daily diet, in addition to its value as an accessible product adaptable to different times of the day.
Regarding prices, the Office of Agrarian Studies and Policies (Odepa) reported that, in October 2025, a kilo of marraqueta costs $2,332; the hallulla, $2,307; and the bread kneaded, $2,559. Although marraqueta continues to lead preferences, there is a growth in the consumption of healthier options, such as ciabatta or whole wheat bread.
The figures also reveal a diverse panorama regarding the consumption of bread:
- 80% of families buy it at least once a week.
- 45% prefer artisanal bakery bread for its freshness.
- 35% combine traditional bread with whole grain versions.
