Municipalities and regions did not use S/17,460 million from mining canon

Between 2022 and 2024, mining companies transferred S/26,860 million for canonroyalties and excess royalties, however, did not use S/17,460 million, that is, 65% of the total, reported the president of ComexPeruAlonso Rey.

“There is no right for the authorities to have the money and be able to carry out works; while citizens continue to suffer shortages,” he assured and warned that this situation deprives the population of essential basic services.

In that sense, he pointed out that it is necessary to create a trust managed by the contributing companies, so that projects with an impact on affluent communities are prioritized.

Likewise, he pointed out that in Loreto there are 302 paralyzed works, of which 296 are in the municipalities, 14 are from the regional government and two from the central government. Furthermore, he questioned that the potential of funds from mining activity to generate development in communities is not valued.

“The paradox is reflected in regions like Cajamarca, considered one of the poorest in the country, which has five mining projects pending development, but to date they have not been launched,” he indicated.

Likewise, he considered that, in Peru, the contrast between the abundance of mining resources and the limited public management capacity evidences the urgent need to strengthen institutions to ensure better use of mining wealth.
