Leaders and international organizations from Latin America have expressed in recent hours their support for Venezuela and the constitutional president Nicolás Maduro, in the face of the operations of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in the South American country, authorized by the North American ruler, Donald Trump.
The self-determination of the people was the main argument presented to reject the interference of the US agency in Venezuelan territory. The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, said that “the self-determination of the people, and not interference and invasion,” are terms that are in the Mexican Constitution and must transcend to the international arena.
For his part, the president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, expressed that he defends “that the Venezuelan people are masters of their destiny, and it is not any president of another country who should give their opinion on what Venezuela or Cuba should be like,” he made the statement during the national congress of the Communist Party of Brazil (PCdoB). And it was another Brazilian political group, the Workers’ Party (PT), to which the president belongs, who raised his voice of rejection and described Trump’s plans in Venezuela as unacceptable.
«They are an affront to the sovereignty of the South American country and a violation of international law. “This is an unacceptable and deplorable initiative,” declared the PT in a statement.
Also from Brazil, the Special Advisor for International Affairs of the Presidency, Celso Amorim, emphasized that the actions of the United States and the CIA cannot be taken naively.
Amorim maintained that “it would be very naive to say that this (US interference in Venezuela) will not happen.” However, he recalled that “experience shows that the threat is taken to an extreme before a negotiation.” The veteran diplomat left a space for serenity: “Let’s be optimistic,” he concluded.
On the other hand, Colombian President Gustavo Petro warned that CIA operations have not been limited to Venezuela. In his X account the ruler wrote: “But they have been carrying out covert operations for years in Venezuela and other Latin American countries, including Colombia.”
Arce and Petro highlight the impact of the attacks in the region
Also on social networks, the president of Bolivia, Luis Alberto Arce, showed that Trump’s guidelines may affect the Latin American and Caribbean region. “We alert the world to the danger of a military escalation that affects peace and stability in all of Latin America and the Caribbean,” he wrote.

On the interference of the North American intelligence center and others Washington’s actions in the CaribbeanArce expressed that they are: “a clear act of intimidation.” They don’t fool anyone; “This is not a war on drugs, they are interventionist actions that violate national sovereignty.”
The president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, once again highlights that it is not about “defending Maduro”, but rather he once again denotes the impact that these regions can generate in the region. Through his social networks, Petro also noted the importance of the Latin American and Caribbean union against any aggression to defend the sovereignty of the region.
«Latin and South America and the Caribbean must unite now to reject and react, beyond discourse, against any aggression against Bolívar’s homeland and the Latin American and Caribbean territory. Venezuela belongs to the Venezuelans. This is not a defense of Maduro, it is the defense of Latin American sovereignty,” reads the message in Petro’s post.
Cuba expresses its solidarity
The president of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel, published today, Friday the 17th, on social media a message of support for Venezuela: “At a time when the empire and its misguided leader approve covert CIA operations against Venezuela, we express our solidarity with that brother people and, especially, with its President Nicolás Maduro.”
President Trump told reporters at the White House on Wednesday that he has authorized the CIA to conduct covert operations in Venezuela and his Administration is considering ground attacks against Venezuela. His statements and his decision to attack boats in the Caribbean Sea under the pretext of a new chapter in the United States’ anti-drug fight have aggravated the relationship between Caracas and Washington.
