HOLY SUNDAY.–The Director of Communications of the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD), Robert Tejada Muñozreported this Friday that the incident that occurred on Thursday on the university campus was caused by a law studentwho confronted security personnel after parking in a prohibited and poorly lit area.
According to Tejada, the incident occurred on the night of Wednesdaywhen the security team withheld the young man’s documents after drawing his attention to the infraction. The next day, the student, identified as Alexander Jimenez Galvanof 35 yearsreturned around 2:00 in the afternoon accompanied by another person and with a firearm in his vehicle, where a new altercation occurred with security members.
During the confrontation, Jiménez Galván fired several shotshurting two security agents with a 12mm caliber shotgun. Both were transferred to Cuban Dominican Centerwhere one underwent emergency surgery due to the severity of his injuries, while the other awaits a surgical intervention on a hand.
In relation to the blows and lacerations that the student presented, the university authorities explained that these were not caused by the security personnel, but rather that they would have been caused by other students who intervened in the midst of chaos. Subsequently, university security contained the situation and handed over the aggressor to the National Police.
The university spokesperson pointed out that the Public Ministry is already investigating the case to initiate a judicial process against the student. Likewise, he announced that the campus security will be reinforceddespite having a surveillance camera system.
“It is good that the community and everyone know that university security is not the military or armed people. They are people from the same university who are dedicated to surveillance and control, but it is not a law enforcement body,” Muñoz stated.
The official also clarified that the university autonomy does not imply a special jurisdictionbut rather it is a historical prerogative derived from the protection granted to the institution since colonial times, when it belonged to the Dominican order.
