A new fire is hitting the Chapada dos Veadeiros National Park, in Goiás, caused by lightning that hit the area during the recent rains in the region. According to the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio), as of this Friday (17), the area affected by fire in the park reaches 1.5 thousand hectares (ha).
On the first front of fireswhich began on January 28, the total area affected exceeds 112 thousand hectares. In the park alone, there were around 900 ha in the first wave of fires and another 653.4 ha due to lightning since Tuesday (14).
The situation had improved with the help of the rain, but with the lightning, a new fire started inside the park.

Trails
On Thursday (16), ICMBio reported that lightning set fire to an area close to the Serra do Santana region, “which could pose a risk to visiting places”. As a result, the park’s crossings were closed on Tuesday (14). Some of them were reopened today, after evaluating safety conditions.
“Trails for daily use, which do not require an overnight stay, remain open to the public as normal,” informed ICMBio.
Teams
A team was then deployed to monitor using a drone and define combat strategies, managing to control the progress of the fire with a force of 30 firefighters, two helicopters and two planes.
The brigade members had been mobilized since the fire started in the Kalunga territory, in Cavalcante.
“Currently, two combat fronts are in operation: one in the Rio Preto area and the other close to Fazenda Procópio, in the municipality of Colinas do Sul. In the latter, 14 brigades from ICMBio are active, ten from Prevfogo — five from the Alto Paraíso 3 brigade and five from the Minasul brigade —, in addition to six members of the Colinas do Sul volunteer brigade”, ICMBio reported this Friday in a note.
The operation involves the participation of 215 people, including brigade members from ICMBio and Prevfogo/Ibama, logistical support staff and volunteers.
