The renowned actor Gustavo Angarita, one of the most beloved and respected figures in Colombian theater, film and television, died at the age of 83 in Bogotá. His death occurred after a long fight against cancer and a series of metabolic complications that affected his heart.
The news was confirmed by his family, after his son, Gustavo Angarita Jr., reported in April 2025 that the artist was hospitalized at the Colombia Clinic, under palliative care. At that time, the actor also explained that his father had been facing cancer for some time – the type of which he preferred not to reveal – although he clarified that the immediate reason for his hospitalization was not the oncological disease, but a serious imbalance in the levels of essential nutrients.
“He has lost consciousness a little and cannot assimilate nutrients well; this affects calcium and magnesium and is very dangerous for the heart,” his son explained then. This situation ended up further weakening the health of the actor, who ultimately failed to overcome the complications derived from that clinical condition.
A life marked by art and coherence
Gustavo Angarita was not only an exceptional performer, but an integral artist. Actor, sculptor, painter and teacher, his life was dedicated completely to creation. He trained at the School of Dramatic Art in Bogotá and at the Université Internationale de Théâtre in Paris, where he was immersed in the surrealist currents of Dalí, Magritte and Miró.
His career began in the theater, as a member of historical groups such as The Candelaria and the Popular Theater of Bogotá (TPB)where he starred in memorable works such as Richard III and The Threepenny Opera.
As time went by, he also conquered television, participating in iconic productions such as The house of the two palms, The Filly Zaina, Rasputin, Men and Swallow Maluca. In the cinema he shone in titles such as time to die, The snail strategy, Bolívar is me and Sofia and the stubborna role that earned him the Best Actor award at the Binational Film Festival between Venezuela and Colombia.
The legacy he leaves
Over more than five decades, Gustavo Angarita received multiple awards, including several India Catherine, Simon Bolivar and the tribute A whole life of the Colombian Film Festival in New York.
However, his greatest mark is not measured in awards, but in the respect and affection he generated among colleagues and spectators. His niece said goodbye to him with a message that sums up his essence:
“Your legacy remains carved—like your sculptures—in the memory of Colombian art and in the hearts of those of us who had the privilege of loving you.”
