Public universities demand that President José Jerí not normalize more deaths or violence in protests

After expressing its deep concern about the murder perpetrated by a police officer against the young protester Eduardo Ruiz, the Association of National Universities of Peru (Aunap) demanded from President José Jerí do not normalize more deaths or violence during the legitimate protests that various social groups have been following.

“We reaffirm the constitutional right to peaceful protest and condemn all forms of violence, or disproportionate use of force, wherever it comes from.. We urge the Prime Minister (Ernesto Álvarez) to immediately lead full coverage of the expenses and damages of the young man and of all the injured without exception; as well as guaranteeing the legal defense and due process of those detained,” said Aunap, which brings together various public universities.

On the other hand, he demanded Congress to act with a sense of State and promote real reforms against organized crime. “A Plenary Session on Citizen Security and the Fight against Crime must meet once a week, correcting the various permissive (pro-crime) norms that they approved and prioritizing laws that do strengthen criminal investigation, with the aim of avoiding more deaths at the hands of extortionists, hitmen and criminals,” he noted.

The Aunap also asked the Executive to immediately install the National Agreement for Citizen Security, with the participation of universities, organized youth, and civil society, to build a rapid, serious and sustainable reform to stop organized crime. Of course, he clarified, without delegitimized politicians.

“October 15 should mark a turning point for the country. Public universities reaffirm their commitment to democracy, truth and peace, and put their academic, scientific and technical capacity at the service of the country to help rebuild trust and the direction of Peru,” responded the Aunap.

Affront against the Dean of America

This statement comes amid the unfortunate statements of the Minister of the Interior, Vicente Tiburcio, who described the students of the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos (UNMSM) as ‘violentists’ after the mobilizations of October 15. “This is no longer a peaceful protest, this is an attack against the National Police. The most ‘violent’ have been from San Marcos. “This cannot happen,” he said.

In response, the UNMSM stated that these improper qualifications affect its institutional image, which stands out for training great professionals. “The minister must rectify his painful statementssince it puts the entire university community at risk,” he indicated.

The Faculty of Letters of the Dean of America also condemned the stigmatizing expressions of Minister Tiburcio against the people of San Marcos. “We urge the transitional government to listen to the citizens and find a real solution to this political crisis,” he said.
