Trump announces meeting with Putin in Budapest to continue seeking an end to the war in Ukraine

He US presidentDonald Trump announced this Thursday that he will meet with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, in Budapest, Hungary, with the aim of explore ways to end the conflict between Russia and Ukrainealthough without specifying the exact date of the meeting.

According to the announcement, published on their social network Truth Social, it will be the second meeting between both leaders after the one held on August 15 in Alaska.

“President Putin and I will meet at an agreed upon location, Budapest, Hungary, to see if we can end this ignominious war between Russia and Ukraine,” Trump wrote.

The US president explained that, as a preliminary step, both governments agreed to convene a meeting of high-level advisors next week, in which the Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, will participate on behalf of Washington.

Trump’s previous dialogue with Putin and meeting with Zelensky

The announcement comes one day before the scheduled meeting between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House, the agency reported. EFE.

The American leader announced that during that meeting they will address “the conversation with Putin and much more.”

Trump described his telephone conversation with the Russian president as “very productive” and assured that he congratulated him “for the great achievement of peace in the Middle East,” in reference to the recent ceasefire agreement in Gaza.

“I firmly believe that this success in the Middle East will contribute to our negotiations to end the war with Russia and Ukraine,” the Republican stressed.

According to Trump, Putin also thanked the first lady, Melania Trump, for her efforts to reunify Ukrainian children with their families.

Tension over possible missile shipment

In recent days, the US president suggested the possibility of supplying Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine, a statement interpreted by analysts as a new turn in Washington’s pressure strategy towards Moscow.

From the Kremlin, authorities warned this Thursday that a possible shipment of this type of weapons to kyiv would represent “a new level of escalation” in the conflict.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov has already confirmed to the press that the meeting between Trump and Putin “could take place within two weeks or a little later”; and stressed that “there is a general consensus that nothing should be postponed,” as quoted from Sputnik.
