Will the biometric CURP be mandatory for all people?
According to Rosa Icela Rodríguez, head of the Ministry of the Interior, the biometric CURP will not be mandatory for citizens. Its implementation will follow a gradual and voluntary process throughout the country.
“The implementation of the CURP with photography is carried out in a voluntary, gradual, orderly and coordinated manner in order to guarantee that it is safe, reliable and accessible to all,” he recently declared at a conference.
Although it will not be a legal requirement for all citizens, you can use it to carry out procedures in public agencies and with individuals. They will be obliged to accept it as a valid identification document.
This means that you can choose if you want to obtain it, but once you have it, you will have the right to use it in any process that requires identity validation.
What data does the biometric CURP include?
The General Population Law establishes the elements that make up this new version of the Unique Population Registration Code. The data is focused on ensuring accurate and reliable identification.
Your biometric CURP will contain name and surname, date of birth, sex or gender, place of birth and nationality. This data was already present in the traditional format.
The main change is the incorporation of biometric data. These include fingerprints and a recent photograph that will be linked to the digital and physical document.
Thanks to these elements, the biometric CURP also seeks to function as an identifier on digital platforms, validating your identity instantly, without the need for multiple documents.
Where can you process it in CDMX
The Ministry of the Interior added that there are currently 145 active teams to capture biometric data in civil registries and offices of the National Population Registry (Renapo) nationwide.
During the last Afores Fair, held on August 4, the general director of the National Registry of Population and Identity (Renapo), Félix Arturo Arce Vargas, said that a pilot module is already operating in Mexico City to process the biometric CURP, an improved version of the Unique Population Registry Code that integrates biometric data in order to reinforce the right to identity and prevent cases of impersonation.
During the Afores fair there was a module for capturing biometrics, but there are also permanent options.
