A group of firefighters works this Tuesday in the rescue of the bodies of 14 deceased miners after the flooding of a mine in the state of Bolívar, in southern Venezuela, local authorities confirmed to Efe. The accident, attributed to the intense rains affecting the region, occurred in the town of El Callao.
The Firefighters of the Roscio municipality, in charge of the operations, detailed that the work focuses on draining water from the wells in the area as the first phase.
“As the first phase, the work to drain all the wells in the sector begins to reduce the water level, to later evaluate rescue work,” the force explained through its Instagram account.
Venezuela registers 300% more rain than expected in 2025
The opposition party Popular Will (VP) regretted the event on Tuesday, referring to the tragedy as the “collapse of a mine” due to the “heavy rains.” “We send our condolences to his family and friends, and we sympathize with all those affected by the rains,” said VP in X.
This tragedy occurs in a context of intense rainfall in Venezuela. The Minister of Science and Technology, Gabriela Jiménez, reported on Thursday that the country has recorded 300% more rain than expected during 2025, attributing the situation to the climate crisis.
The rains, which began at the end of June, have affected more than 7,000 families and caused damage in much of western and central Venezuela, including the regions of Barinas, Táchira, Trujillo, Mérida, Portuguesa and Guárico.
