The IAPA starts its 81st General Assembly with the focus on press freedom and AI

Santo Domingo.- The Inter-American Press Society (IAPA) inaugurates this Thursday in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, its 81 General Assemblyl, focused on the challenges of contemporary journalism, with special attention to press freedom, media sustainability and the impact of artificial intelligence on the profession.

During the Assembly, which will bring together editors, journalists and media executives from across the continent, reports on the situation of press freedom in 24 countries in the region will be presented and discussed, along with panels and workshops on innovation, digital transformation, business models and the role of the press in democracy.

The conferences will be encompassed in three blocks that will have as themes “freedom of the press – democracy at risk”; “innovation, sustainability and digital transformation” and the “future and training”.

The opening ceremony will feature the participation of the president of the Dominican Republic, Luis Abinader; the minister of Dominican tourism, David Collado; the deputy secretary general of the Organization of the American States (OAS), Laura Gil; and the president of the IAPA, José Roberto Dutriz, who is the general director and CEO of La Prensa Gráfica de El Salvador, according to a statement from the organization.

On Saturday the award ceremony for the Journalistic Excellence Awards will be held in 12 categories, along with 24 honorable mentions.

Among the winners are the journalists of the Spanish newspaper ‘El País’ Carol Mundi and Luis Almodóvar for “report, through images and devastating testimonies, the crushing of the rights of women and, in general, of the population Afghan, by the Taliban regime” in his documentary ‘The Taliban yoke that suffocates women in the name of Allah’, according to the IAPA.

Also awarded is journalist Hugo Alconada Mon from the Argentine newspaper ‘La Nación’ for his interview ‘Pepe Mujica – At 20, love is a bonfire.

In addition, Juan Aurelio Arévalo Miró Quesada from the Peruvian newspaper ‘The Trade’ will receive the award for his chronicle ‘Death in Plaza San Martín’, in which he reconstructs “using a profusion of data and irrefutable sources, and through lilting, immersive and literary prose, a historical crime from almost a century ago in Peru.”

“These recognitions highlight the diversity and rigor of the best journalism in the Americas and Spain,” indicated the IAPA. The IAPA, based in Miami and composed of more than 1,300 publications of the Americas, is a non-profit entity dedicated to the defense and promotion of freedom of the press and expression.

The previous IAPA General Assembly was held from October 17 to 20 in the Argentine city of Córdoba, in which the Salta II Declaration was approved, a document that included the challenges facing press freedom in the region, artificial intelligence (AI) and copyright.
