The province of Granma recorded locally intense rains during the last 24 hourss, with the highest accumulated in the municipality of Niquero, where 218 millimeters of precipitation were reported, according to the Institute of Meteorology (INSMET).
Specialist Ezequiel Cadrelo explained that the rains were associated with the influence of an upper trough, combined with local factors, evening instability and high levels of humidity in the atmosphere.
In addition to Niquero, notable accumulations were recorded in Cabo Cruz (69 mm) and Pilón (64 mm), reflecting a pattern of heavy rainfall in much of the provincial territory.
Positive impact on reservoirs
The rains have had a favorable effect on the water situation of the provinceaccording to the newspaper Granma.
According to data shared by Yudelki Ortiz Barceló, first secretary of the PCC in the province, The reservoirs are currently at 55% of their filling capacity.with an estimated increase of 10,656 million cubic meters of water.
The greatest increases were recorded in the Vicana (3,328 million cubic meters) and Corojo (3,090 million) dams, considered strategic for the supply and agricultural production of the territory.

Heavy rains in Granma
INSMET specialists warn that the atmospheric behavior of recent days is part of a stage of high instability and strong humidity at medium and low levels.
These conditions, they point out, could lead to new events of rain and thunderstorms in the eastern region during the next few days.
Although the rainfall represents a relief for the hydraulic system of Granma—one of the provinces most affected by drought in the recent summer—local authorities asked to remain vigilant against possible flooding in low-lying areas or near rivers.
