Chile begins a new cycle

Boric, 36, and representative of the left-wing coalition I Approve Dignity, took office the day before during a ceremony at the National Congress headquarters in Valparaíso, where heads of state or government and delegations from various countries, mostly Latin American, participated. .

After his inauguration, the president traveled to the capital to offer his first speech to the nation from the Palacio de La Moneda.

“Today the dreams of millions of people are here pushing us to bring about the changes that society demands,” Boric told a crowd gathered in the Plaza de la Constitución.

However, he acknowledged that meeting the goals will not be easy because the country is facing an internal and external crisis.

“We are going to live in challenging and tremendously complex times. The (Covid-19) pandemic continues its course with a balance of pain and loss of life and will be with us for a long time, ”she warned.

He added that the economy continues to suffer and the country needs to grow and fairly distribute the fruits because when wealth is concentrated only in a few, peace is very difficult.

The president mentioned among his priorities reducing social inequality, fighting crime, reforming the police and improving health and education.

Regarding the migration crisis in the north of the country, he promised to regain control of the borders and work with sister countries to collectively address the difficulties that lead to the exodus of thousands of human beings.

Regarding the situation in La Araucanía, he considered it unfair to talk about the Mapuche conflict.

“No gentlemen, it is not the Mapuche conflict. It is the conflict between the Chilean State and a people that has the right to exist. And there the solution is not and will not be violence. We will work tirelessly to rebuild trust after so many decades of abuse and dispossession,” he stated.

Boric also promised to enthusiastically accompany the process towards a Magna Carta to replace the one that has existed since the time of Augusto Pinochet’s dictatorship (1973-1990).

“We need a Constitution that unites us, that we feel as our own, that unlike the one that was imposed by blood, fire and fraud by the dictatorship, is born in democracy, on a parity basis, with the participation of indigenous peoples,” he said.

The new president expressed his determination to work together with neighboring countries to face the enormous challenges. “We are profoundly Latin American and from this continent we will make efforts so that the voice of the South can once again be firmly heard in a changing world,” he declared.

In the opinion of the Argentine head of state, Alberto Fernández, the new Chilean government represents “a great boost” for Latin America; meanwhile, his Bolivian counterpart, Luis Arce, considered that Boric’s investiture will strengthen the bridges of regional integration.
