The arrival of the rains brought relief to the farmers of the rural community of San Jerónimo de Tunán, where 80% of the crops correspond to corn, one of the most representative products of the district. However, the overproduction recorded in this campaign has generated a sharp drop in the price of its flagship product.
“Before it was sold for 70 soles per arroba, and today it barely reaches 25 soles. Our corn has always been special, but this season there was a super-planting because previously there was a certain shortage and there was no corn”explained Paúl Cabezas, president of the peasant community, adding that, despite the crisis in the market, production continues to be sent to Lima and various provinces in the Junín region.
For this reason, the recent rains, which arrived with a slight delay, are considered good news for the 120 community members who depend mainly on agriculture. “We are always waiting for the rains to do the general sowing. It had already been delayed a little, but now it gives us hope”said Cabezas, highlighting that about 60% of the land still depends exclusively on rainwater and the rest already has irrigation canals enabled.
