Collision of a truck with a pole causes a “major magnitude” electrical breakdown in Villa Clara

The collision of a truck with a pole this Sunday night in Ranchuelos caused a “major magnitude” electrical breakdown in that town of Villa Clara.

The accident caused “an arc of incandescent light” at the Ranchuelos electrical substation “that could be seen from various parts of the territory,” inform the Cuban News Agency (ACN).

The report indicates that as a result of the crash, a group of circuits in that Villa Clara municipality were left without electricity. Jeily Manresa Sarduy, president of the municipal assembly of Popular Power, pointed out that about 10,000 people were affected by what happened.

For his part, Everest Morales Pérez, director of the local electricity company, explained that the damage to the primary and secondary lines was being evaluated, but confirmed that the impact is “of great magnitude.”

“In a month we don’t have power”

Publications on social networks refer to the occurrence of an explosion—presumably derived from the overload in the substation as a result of the crash—and show the reaction of residents of the area to what happened.

“In a month we don’t have electricity” a person is heard saying in one of the videos that circulate on the networks.

The official report does not yet provide an estimate of how long it could take to recover the affected circuits. It also does not specify the cause of the accident, which would be under investigation.

On the other hand, it states that the truck involved in the incident belonged to the Transportation and Mechanization Services Company (TRAZMEC) and that the driver was traveling with a minor, who were taken to a polyclinic to receive medical attention.

The ACN It does not provide information about the condition of both, although the president of the municipal assembly assured the media that “there are no deaths or injuries” as a result of the accident.

This event occurs at a time when Cuba is going through a worsening of its prolonged energy crisis, with blackouts of 20 or more hours in a row in different locations, constant breakdowns in generating units and a chronic fuel deficit.
