Havana in darkness due to substation explosion: 54% of Cuba will remain turned off

Felton 1 / Avería en Habana del Este

Havana was aggravated by the explosion in an electrical substation, the crash of a tanker truck and the departure of Felton 1.

LIMA, Peru – An explosion in an electrical substation, the crash of a tanker truck and the failure of the Felton 1 thermoelectric unit resulted this Saturday in a serious blackout in Havana, breakdowns that have an impact on the forecast of damages for this October 12 in the capital of the Island.

The Electric Company of Havana reported in the afternoon The day before, due to a trip on lines 9020-9015 (Naranjito/Melones Substations), an explosion occurred, affecting the Talla Piedra Substation.

Although firefighters went to the scene of the incident and are working to restore it as quickly as possible, the municipalities most affected by this breakdown during the weekend are Centro Habana, Habana Vieja, San Miguel del Padrón, Arroyo Naranjo, 10 de Octubre and Cerro.

Subsequently, from late at night until this morning, a brigade from the UEB Havana del Este and a resident of that municipality had to work to resolve a breakdown caused by the collision of a tanker truck with a pole in Zone 19 of Alamar, until the restoration of service in this district was achieved.

This morning the state company also notified the “unforeseen departure” of the Felton 1 unit, whose deficit was restored at 3:46AM today.

For its part, the Electrical Union (UNE) published its share of blackouts for this Sunday, with a greater impact than the recent Saturday.

According to the UNE, during peak hours an availability of 1,570 megawatts (MW) and a maximum demand of 3,250 MW are estimated, for a deficit of 1,680 MW. If the forecast conditions continue then, an impact of 1,750 MW is forecast during this time, which will shut down approximately 54% of the Island.

Electricity outages exceed 20 hours a day in eastern provinces, while in Havana blackouts reach up to 10 hours a day.

The energy crisiswhich has been dragging on since mid-2024, is due to breakdowns in obsolete thermal power plants, scheduled maintenance, lack of fuel and lubricants, in addition to the paralysis of dozens of distributed generation engines and poor government management.
