The acting president, Geraldo Alckmin, participates, this Monday (13), in Brasília, in the opening of the Pre-COP, the Preparatory Ministerial Meeting of the 30th United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP30). It is the last meeting of negotiators before COP30, which will be held next month, in Belém (PA).
The Pre-COP will bring together delegates and observers from countries that are signatories to the United Nations climate change treaty. It is a space for technical and political alignment between countries and aims to boost negotiations on key challenges of the global climate agenda, such as climate finance, energy transition, adaptation and biodiversity preservation.
As this meeting is not part of the official calendar of the Climate Convention secretariat, delegations that coordinate regional groups are prioritized. Brasília is expected to receive around 500 representatives from 50 countries. There are two days of the event, Monday and Tuesday (14).
A concern that has been expressed by the COP30 presidency is the delivery of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), which are the commitments and goals of each country in combating climate change.
Until last Friday (10), 62 of the 196 signatory countries had presented their ambitions, but countries such as China and India, considered major emitters, have not yet made their plans official.
Alckmin is holding the presidency of the Republic because President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is traveling to Rome, Italy, where he will participate in food safety events .
