To celebrate the 94th anniversary of the Sanctuary of Christ the Redeemer, the Children’s Day and that of Our Lady of Aparecida, patron saint of Brazil, a thanksgiving mass was held this Sunday (12), at 8am, in Alto do Corcovado, celebrated by the rector of the Sanctuary, Father Omar Raposo.
The Catholic celebration was attended by comedian Renato Aragão, presented as one of the new Ambassadors of Christ the Redeemer for Culture and Tourism, through municipal law of July 14, 2025, which established Christ the Redeemer Day in the official calendar of the city of Rio de Janeiro.
Renato Aragão was called to the altar, where he placed the crown on the head of Our Lady of Aparecida, patron saint of Brazil.
Despite the cloudy sky, with fog covering the statue of Christ, hundreds of faithful were present at the celebration. During the homily, Father Omar asked Our Lady to pray for forgotten children, in vulnerable situations and excluded from school and other rights guaranteed by the Constitution.
The program began with the launch of the Clássico é Brincar social campaign, promoted by the Consórcio Cristo Sustentável and the Festival Clássicos do Brasil, which has the goal of collecting 10,000 toys and children’s books for children in socially vulnerable situations by October 31st.
During the day, mass also began at 11am, and the program includes celebrations at 3pm and 5pm. There will also be the Angelus Prayer at noon and 6pm, at the Sanctuary of Christ the Redeemer.
According to Alerta Rio, atmospheric conditions this Sunday in the city of Rio de Janeiro will be influenced by heat and areas of instability at medium/high levels of the atmosphere. Thus, the sky will vary between partly cloudy and cloudy, with isolated rain showers expected from the end of the afternoon. Winds will be weak to moderate and temperatures will rise, with a predicted maximum of 33°C.
This Monday (13), the monument to Christ the Redeemer will receive special blue lighting at 7pm to celebrate the Twinning between the Archdiocesan Sanctuary of Christ the Redeemer and the Santa Dulce dos Pobres Sanctuary, in Bahia. The sanctuaries will connect with partnerships in the areas of Faith, Tourism, Culture, Sustainable and Social Development. Twinning aims to share experiences.
