Heading to the World Cup, spending on transportation and tourism reports drops of more than 35%

In the January-August period, transportation spending fell 56.3%, the most pronounced decrease on record, compared to the same periods, according to figures from the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit (SHCP).

The decrease in spending in the transportation function is due to the concentration of resources in the last year of the administration led by Andrés Manuel López Obrador for the completion of flagship works, in addition to the continuation of the fiscal austerity policy of the government led by Claudia Sheinbaum which, to a large extent, is due to adjustments to programmable spending, which focuses on federal government programs and investment expenses.

“Faced with the celebration of the World Cup in three of the country’s main cities, logistics will be essential, the entire Mexico City airport area and the AIFA will need investments. The AICM to sustain its operations in a better direction, and the AIFA because it needs connection with the city. Also in Guadalajara there is the need to accelerate and adapt works that will be important,” commented Jesús Carrillo, economic analyst.

Likewise, in the metropolitan region of Monterrey, activity needs to be accelerated for the subway that is being built and expansions of main avenues.

“However, if you don’t work on this from now on you will be late, because these are not projects that can be done in two months,” highlighted the specialist.

Less for tourism

Meanwhile, tourism spending, which serves to promote tourist activity through investment in infrastructure, promotion of destinations and support for related public services, reported a drop of 38%, the second most pronounced after 49.1% in 2021.

This can have negative implications for the economic impact of this global event, since visitors, in addition to getting to know the host cities, can take advantage of the trip to the country to see the destination of beaches or colonial cities.

“If there are no conditions, good infrastructure in businesses, providers of accommodation, entertainment, food and tourist services could suffer from a lack of adequate infrastructure, which is important so that small businesses have the capacity to serve all the multitude of visitors that we are going to have from all over the world,” he noted.
