The Piauí Artificial Intelligence project, created by the government of Piauí with the aim of implementing the Artificial Intelligence discipline in state schools, is among those selected for the 2025 edition of the Unesco-King Hamad Bin Isa Al-Khalifa Award for the Use of Information and Communication Technologies in Education. UNESCO is the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization.
The result of a partnership involving the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul and the Department of Education of Piauí, the program indicated by the Brazilian National Commission for UNESCO is a critical analysis of the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and support for equity and inclusion.
It competed with 86 international initiatives, proposed by more than 50 member states and non-governmental organizations.

“With the aim of integrating AI into the public school curriculum in the state of Piauí, making it a mandatory subject from the 9th year until the end of high school, Piauí Artificial Intelligence offers a three-year learning program that integrates the ethics of AI in all its modules and combines digital and face-to-face activities, making it accessible in environments with few resources”, highlights UNESCO.
The project benefits more than 90 thousand students in 540 public schools each year. Furthermore, it has already trained more than 680 teachers.
Government celebrates
The selection of the project, among the four award winners, was celebrated by Brazilian authorities. “The Brazilian government was pleased to receive the selection of the Piauí Artificial Intelligence project for the 2025 edition of the award”, highlighted the Itamaraty in a statement.
According to the international evaluating jury, Piauí Artificial Intelligence represents a “comprehensive and inclusive model, capable of empowering educators and social agents to promote the ethical and responsible use of artificial intelligence in education”.
“The selection of the Brazilian project reflects the importance attributed by Brazil to digital technologies as allies of social and educational development”, highlighted the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
