Another unit from Santa Cruz synchronizes but one from Nuevitas leaves “for reasons pending to be identified”

More breakdowns in thermoelectric plants will leave more than half of the country in blackout during peak hours

The thermal unit outputs continue to hit the electricity generation and perpetuating blackouts in Cuba.

Although on this Friday night connected unit 1 of the Santa Cruz del Norte thermoelectric plant – the second of that plant to be incorporated these days after the recent entry of number 3 – another block suffered an unforeseen departure at the end of the morning today.

Unit 6 of Nuevitas was disconnected around 5:00 AM “due to pending causes to be identified and a DAF (frequency automatic trip),” as reported the Electrical Union (UNE).

This trip affected 89 MW and was already being restored, the entity explained, according to which the block should be active for the night peak this Saturday.

If so, this unit would contribute 70 MW in that time slot, to which another 80 would be added for the “completion” of unit 3 of Cienfuegos. Why that block had lost that capacity and when it would have happened is not something that the UNE explains in your part.

More than 500 MW of thermal limitations

At 6:00 AM the electricity availability in the country was 1630 MW and the impact amounted to 840 MW, lower than in previous days.

However, at midday that figure must increase to 1,250 MW and at the nighttime peak to 1,640 MW—similar to yesterday (1,692 MW), although for this the planned inputs must occur and no other breakdown or increase in estimated demand (3,350 MW) occur.

Among the main difficulties in the energy scenario this Saturday are 505 MW lost due to limitations of the thermal units in operation.

In addition, almost 600 MW will stop being produced due to lack of fuel (280 MW) and lubricants (315 MW), a problem that day after day hinders electricity generation on the island and that at least today will have no possibility of recovery, according to the UNE.
