Dina Boluarte's lawyer questions vacancy: "It is an irrational and arbitrary measure"

The lawyer of Dina BoluarteJuan Carlos Portugal, spoke out after the recent decisions adopted by Congress and described the presidential vacancy as an “unreasonable and arbitrary” measure.

The lawyer specified that he has not spoken directly with Boluarte on the issue, although he stressed that he maintains an institutional position regarding his defense role.

“I have not spoken with the (former) president about that. I reiterate, I have a policy as a lawyer: if I take a position, I do not expose it to the media, but to whoever it corresponds to. If hypothetically I take that position, the judge will know and then you will know,” he told the press.

The lawyer also recognized the crisis that the Government is going through, but stressed that this does not justify the excesses or the loss of democratic institutions.

“I am not invisible in the face of the crisis that the (former) president’s management has had. Every death must be investigated, every extortion must be condemned, but democracy is not fought with autarky or ungovernability; it is not the way to sustain a regime or to maintain civility in this country,” he expressed.

Finally, Portugal questioned the way in which Congress acted towards the Executive and considered that its response “was not the most democratic.”
